Lighthouse Festival 1996

Sturgeon Point

Although the 1st annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival was centered in Alpena, Michigan, the activities included cities far enough away for bus trips. Jim and I didn't join one of those tours. Instead, we made our own trips, maps in hand, beginning with Sturgeon Point, slightly north of Harrisville and following the Huron Lake Circle Tour.

Old Presque Isle

New Presque Isle

Old and New Presque Isle Lighthouses are separated by one mile. New Presque Isle replaced the old lighthouse in 1870. It is known as the tallest lighthouse in Michigan. Over the Festival week-end the tower was opened. I think this was the only one where I had a chance to climb and declined instead. I did go to the museum and gift shop, which I always enjoy.

Forty Mile Point

Following the map, still on the Huron Lake Circle Tour, we continued North to Rogers City and stopped at the Forty Mile Point lighthouse. You could visit inside, but at this time it was under alot of construction and repair. The lighthouse is located at the Presque Isle County Lighthouse Park. This was our final lighthouse of the week-end, so we headed back to Alpena and enjoyed the vendors and sites there.
